A yellow line indicates the track of a rat demonstrating spatial memory on a rotating disc. The animal avoids the stationary sector where it had been shocked the previous day. Inhibition of the persistent kinase that maintains long-term potentiation at hippocampal synapses erases the stored memory. The instability of long-term memory is suggested by the Salvador Dali painting, The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory. The background shows Golgi-stained hippocampal neurons by Lorente de Nó.

The article starts out introducing the subject by presenting a possibility of having a traumatic experience and being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The introduction then leads to the discussion of recent discoveries of method to erase memories. It portrays the fact that memory researchers have recently begun to use medications known as beta-blockers, traditionally used to treat high blood pressure, in an attempt to prevent the onset of PTSD. As evidence it refers to the research of James McGaugh, director of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory at the UC-Irvine, which conveys people are more likely to remember events that are emotionally arousing. Physicians have been “blocking the emotional arousal” of patients with high blood pressure for years through the use of drugs called beta blockers. It also discusses on the use of propranolol to conduct memory research, suggesting that if a patient undergoes treatment with propanolol within the hours following a traumatic episode, negative memories would not be as deeply embedded in the brain. In the end, the article discusses the controversial side by presenting the ethical reflection about the applications of research into memory formation, which states that memories make up an important part of a person’s identity.

The article is definitely a reliable and credible source. Its credibility is established by the references it give to experts in the field such as James McGaugh and David Speigel, professor of psychology and associate chair of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at School of Medicine here at Stanford. The author also uses ethos many times as his rhetorical devise, which is demonstrated by the definitions and thoroughly explained scientific terms without the addition of any emotional feedback. The source is not biased but is extremely objective in addressing the topic and informing the audience.

The effectiveness of the LHC relies on a chain of particle accelerators, the oldest of which was constructed in the 1950s. Based on these additional resources, countless physics are making improvements for the successful operation and smooth running of the LHC. The machine has four detectors- ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb. ATLAS and CMS are very big particle detectors weighing 7000 and 12500 tons respectively. Just the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector alone is designed and built by more than 2,500 scientists. After the completion of the machine, engineers from thirty nine nations will help investigate the fundamental nature of particles and explore dark matter — matter that cannot be directly observed, but comprises most matter in the universe. Installation of the final component of the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator is under way along the Franco-Swiss, border of Geneva, Switzerland.

What is expected? Well, once the experiments begin this machine shall provide an enormous amount of data that will enable the physicists to look at the fundamental building blocks of matter and their interactions at the smallest distances. Many researchers are hoping to see supersymmetric particles, called Sparticles for short. Sparticles are predicted by supersymmetry theory, which posits that for every particle we know of, there is a sister particle that we have not yet discovered. The main scientific objectives of this mission is to provide information about dark matter (the mysterious stuff in the universe that astronomers can detect gravitationally, but not see), black holes, extra dimensions of space, possible violations of special theory of relativity, and matter under extreme conditions. If all goes as expected by the physicists and the LHC works, it will give explanations for some of the biggest mysteries in science.
